Why Do Different Feng Shui Schools Offer Different Advice?

The Schools of Feng Shui

All schools of Feng Shui are based on similar universal knowledge, but have developed different approaches and techniques for identifying and balancing chi. Two of the oldest and most traditional are: Form and Compass School. There are also many different options within compass school.

What can also be confusing is that different books use different terminology to describe the same thing, so for example a particular trigram can have the name Gen or Xen or Chen and it referring to the same trigram! Some books determine the direction of the home by its facing direction , while others by the sitting! Even the Dummy books describe a certain method and therefore you need to ensure that you know which method you are actually reading about - trying to incorporate more than one without proper training is very difficult!

The most popular schools include:

Form School

The study of the natural terrain, evaluating the balance of the surrounding environment including structures, hill, mountains, roads, highways and waterways to determine good or bad Feng Shui.

Compass School-Eight Mansions or East West

Based on the eight directions of the compass, every person and building has four best and four worst directions. They belong to either the east or west group based on birth date or sitting direction. By knowing and utilizing the best directions you will be supported in your life. There is no time factor in this school.

Compass School-Flying Stars

Flying star uses the eight trigrams and the Lo Shu magic square. Directional compass readings and construction dates factor into the flying star calculations as there is a time factor in the precise mathematical calculations. It is based on scientific observations of energetic patterns that are consistently repeatable over time. Flying Star is said to offer the fastest results! But very difficult to do without a great deal of study and training.

Life Aspiration School - Compass & Western

The Bagua is used as an energy map and broken down into eight (nine with centre) directions. Each of these directions or sectors is responsible for a specific aspiration and includes a specific element and colour. Different aspirations are activated in particular ways. For example North is career, the element of water and the colours of blue and black. The Bagua is placed over the floor plan based on direction of facing (usually front door).

Black Hat Sect Feng Shui

Generally referred to as Western Feng Shui at its purest, it is spiritual and deals with intention. Western encompasses using Feng Shui along with Interior Design, Psychology, color therapy, five elements, ying yang, common sense and intuition. The Bagua here is evaluated by placement from the position of the front door regardless of the compass direction. In this practice of Black Hat Feng Shui there is a static energy map, and no time factor involved. It is the simplest form next to From School

At Blue Avalon, we take a much more encompassing view than most Feng Shui practitioners. When we analyze a home, we include analysis of all the above methods. We then incorporate the most effective information from all disciplines in order to effect the best results in the shortest amount of time!
